‘Cokanasiga, A Patriot’: PM

The late Joketani Cokanasiga was a great man with a big heart and the best example of a patriot, said Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mr Bainimarama was joined by President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, Speaker of the House Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Cabinet ministers, friends and loved ones at Mr Cokanasiga’s funeral at his village in Saniveiuto, Deuba yesterday.

“He treated everyone with respect and equally. As the Minister for Defence he played a crucial role in bringing a turbulent Fiji to peace,” Mr Bainimarama said.

Mr Cokanasiga served as Minister of Public Works and Energy in the transitional Cabinet formed by Laisenia Qarase after the 2000 coup. He held the position until the elected Government was in power in September 2001.

In 2007, Mr Cokanasiga accepted the invitation to be Acting Minister of Fisheries and Forestry in the Government led by Voreqe Bainimarama.

He was the Minister for Defence when he resigned in September 2014.

He passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 7 at the Nasese Medical Centre in Suva after an illness that he was suffering from for some time. He was 83.
