Community members from Lololo, Lautoka, received a $1500 cheque from Nabou Green Energy Pte Limited, for their efforts in replanting 10,000 acacia mangium and Glasedi sepium seedlings.

Nabou Green Energy Pte Limited general manager, Richard Yogesh Kashyap, said the payout was part of a programme between Fiji Pine Trust, Ministry of Forestry, Nabou Green Energy Pte Limited and landowners.

“We are encouraging land owners of idle land to utilise their land.

“We will provide seedlings; they can plant it,” Mr Kashyap said.

“We can sign an agreement that we will buy the product from them, at the same time we are helping the community by engaging people to participate in potting and planting.

“The plant matures in two years, so the community members can get returns after two years.”

Mr Kashyap said the initiative was in support of Government’s replanting initiative, and fulfilled  sustainable development goals for safe, clean and affordable energy.

Saini Kurukareva, 71, thanked the Fijian government and the Nabou Green Energy Pte Limited for providing employment opportunities for rural communities.

“There are five of us working at the nursery,  where we fill soil in bags to replant,” Mr Kurukareva said.

“Six of us replanted 10,000 seedlings last month.

“This is income generation for us.

“We are grateful that employment is at our door; we don’t have to take the bus,” she said.

“My children are in high school, so when  the call came for more hands at the nursery, I willingly went because times are hard, and we need an income.”
