Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage & Arts Anjeela Jokhan has urged parents and teachers of Narere Primary School in Nasinu to steer children away from trouble.

Ms Jokhan said this during the opening of the newly built Year 8 classroom on Friday.

She reiterated that everything started from home and the school could not do it alone.

“Fiji’s National Development plan puts a lot of emphasis on quality education, equality in education, and the right to education of our children irrespective of gender, ethnic background or race,” Ms Jokhan said.

“At a time when there are so many issues with behaviour problems, bullying, and drugs there is an even bigger responsibility on us to nurture these students, create awareness and steer them in the right direction.

“As educators, we have a very important role to play in shaping the lives of our future generations.”

Ms Jokhan said primary school was the critical part and the foundation of children’s growth.

“We all want our children to succeed in their lives. Schools alone cannot do that,” she said.

“Please remember that education is the only way to prosperity and good futures for your children.

“We must provide our students the best possible environment in school to study.

“I urge parents to spend quality time with their children, help them learn to differentiate between good and bad, right and wrong.

“We, as parents, have a much bigger role to play in our children’s success.

“Education is the only way to prosperity and good futures for your children.”

She encouraged the children to work hard in school.

“Please remember that you have some responsibilities as well. You need to know that by working hard you will succeed,” Ms Jokhan said.

“You need to set goals early in your lives.”

540 students attend the school.
