While the owner of the house which burned down in Veisama Feeder Road in Nausori is saddened at the loss of his house, he is still glad no one was injured.

The owner, Rishi Deo, said: “Our tenant moved into the house two years ago and it was a three-bedroom house.”

He confirmed that the house was built five years ago.

“The cost of building the house alone is approximately $60,000. We could not save anything because it was completely burned down,” he said.

“The tenant went to drop his wife and buy bread and when he came back, half of the house was already burned.

“The fire was around 8am, but I am glad no one died or got injured.”

When his son, Rajneel Deo, received a call that the house was on fire, he said: “I ran with basins of water thinking that the fire was still small, but when I got there almost half of the house was burned.

“It was a good thing that fire officers were able to save the house next to our house that was on rent.

“Next to the house is another house where one of my staff is staying. If the fire had spread it would have become a huge fire.

“Lucky we had a fire hydrant near the house and that helped a lot.

“We are just glad that no one died or sustained injuries.”

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

A joint investigation is being conducted by Nausori Police and the National Fire Authority.
