Some farmers who sell their produce under the scorching sun along the Kings and Queens highway will now have a reason to smile.

This was after the acting Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Sukanta Sahoo, handed over a $39,063 grant to assist the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Tourism construct two standardised roadside stalls to support farmers and vendors sell their produce.

Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Faiyaz Koya said the agreement to partner and sponsor the construction of two roadside stalls came at a time when the Government needed the most – to support communities connect to agriculture and rebuild their lives.

“We aim to have these stalls constructed by this year and officially handed over to potential vendors and farmers in the identified locations,” Mr Koya said.

“To date, the ministry has constructed and officially handed over 91 standardised roadside stalls to vendors along the highways in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu,” he said.

“As you all know, in a span of just months, Fiji was faced with three tropical cyclones. This means projects such as this are extremely crucial to ensure Fijians are given not only safe and hygienic but cyclone proof spaces to sell from.”

Mr Sahoo said supporting farmers who sold their produce on the roadside was something he held close to his heart.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic we saw that it was the farmers that needed to be supported, to be able to sell their produce,” he said.

“We are grateful to be of some help to the farmers that who greatly benefit from this assistance that we are formalising today.”
