Catherine Foster, the woman behind the continued success of BIG Mama’s Kitchen, says she is always busy.

In between managing her two children and her online catering business, there is barely enough energy for even a pastime, she said.

“She’s always on her toes,” her husband Edward said.

‘There is no backyard spot for me with the hectic schedule I must keep,” Mrs Foster said.

After taking over her mum’s business, Mrs Foster joined forces with her husband to continue and upgrade the work at her Suva-based business.

“We used the business to help sustain us by way of using the proceeds to pay our mortgage, and supporting our children,” Mrs Foster said.

Operating out of home, the couple’s catering business has been three years running.

“We started small, from making trays of brownies, or pies, which would be sold at offices,” Mrs Foster said.

“Over the years, we gained ground with the market when started taking up opportunities, such as the Sunday markets.

“By the time the Sunday markets became popular, we were ready, because we had experience in catering for office lunches and the likes.

“We didn’t have a choice – we had to step up.”

At times, the couple cater for back-to-back events, which can be over eight days in a row, she said.

“Other times, there is nothing at all – so we have to go out to look for a way to make money for BIG Mama’s Kitchen.”

The business has secured a good number of corporate clients to keep the business going, she said.

What is the one place in Fiji you would take visitors to, and why?
The West, where there is more sun, lots of hotels and resorts and more activities.

What is the one destination on your bucket list, and why?
Every three months, after working non-stop, we plan a getaway to take a break as a family, and head out to discover somewhere we have not been.

Personally, I’d like island hopping in the Mamanuca’s.

What is your favourite place for a coffee or pie?
Sometimes I join my Bible-study friends at The Corner Bakery, in Kundan Singh complex, Princes Rd, Suva.
