Fiji Fashion Week’s first auditions for models in the North drew more than the anticipated turnout.

The national model search for 30 fresh faces continued in Labasa’s Friendly North Inn, on Saturday.

The move marks a leap in confidence for Fiji Fashion Week as it branches out of the mainland since its 15 years as a company.

Fiji Fashion Week spokesperson Lice Movono said fashion brought new ideas to designs and clothing styles for the upcoming fashion show in May.

“They love new ideas, they love new trends, so bringing new faces to the runway helps us to provide the new brand that they want,” she said.

“In terms of quantity, it’s not what we usually get in Suva, and we didn’t expect to get lots of people.

“The quantity may have not been much, but the quality of fresh faces, the quality of confidence that the young people in the North bring was exactly what we wanted, and maybe even more.

“We’re only looking at 10 people out of Labasa and 10 people out of Savusavu.”

A team from Fiji Fashion Week was in Savusavu earlier, searching for new models.

Exposure
Ms Movono said the occasion was important because of the exposure to areas outside of Suva.

Fiji Fashion’s model coach, Meliki Temo, said following the scouting, models would be notified to travel to Suva to rehearse with the company’s other finalists models during the next calling season.

Fiji Fashion Week’s has 35 core models chosen from auditions held prior, in Suva.

Fiji Fashion Week is a global brand that showcases designers and models who go on to gain more exposure on the international fashion scene.

Fiji Fashion Week’s new season will be held between May 24 to May 29.

Brand ambassador, Caroline Gatu, said the tour to the Northern Division was close to her heart as she hailed from Buca Bay, Cakaudrove.

The former student of Labasa College and Savusavu Secondary had dreams of becoming a doctor, but has since embraced modelling for the opportunity it brought in helping her build on her self-esteem.
