Not only Moala, Lau natives, who are born and bred in Suva, can don the white jumper but their fellowmen from the island as well.

Moala Vonokula team manager, Mosese Liwaiono, made the comment as the islanders prepare to make their debut in the 45th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s which starts tomorrow at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

Moala is the island home to many former national reps such as Mosese Natuilagilagi, Sisa Koyamaibole, Kameli Ratuvou, Iliesa Keresoni, Olympic gold medalist, Masivesi Dakuwaqa and Suva’s veteran prop, Sireli Ledua.

Liwaiono indicated they are keen to produce the next national rep from the island.

“We started our preparations in October last year with a mini tournament set for December. But it was called off due to the cyclone,” he said.

“However, the Tropical Cyclones Yasa and Ana did not dampen our spirit, so we started again in February.

“These players are from four villages of Naroi, Vunuku, Nuku and Vadra.”

The other four villages could not attend the trials due to commitments.

“This is the first time for us to participate at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s,”he said.

“Our target is to bring the boys from the island, to come and show the talents  they have.

“We believe not only the Moala people born and bred Suva can don the national jumper but the ones who are raised in the island as well.

“We hope they might be noticed and get selected by some clubs in Suva because that would be a great achievement for us.”

Liwaiono added many who shared  maternal links to Moala as well, such as Fijian 7s squad member, Joseva Talacolo.

He added they are happy with their pool and look forward to their first game with the Fiji Shadow team.

“We are not sure of where the Fiji Shadow team is from but we are hoping that is the team made up of national squad members because that will be a good test for us.”

They are in Pool G with Fiji Shadow, NYB Rugby and Paradise Beverages Fiji Gold.
