Despite being deaf and mute, Police Blue Diamond forward Nasoni Nawanawailagi defied the odds and stood out in yesterday’s Under-21 game.

The Naimasimasi, Tailevu native scored a try in their 10-10 draw against Belovula during the opening day of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s at the ANZ Stadium.

He was part of the Fiji 7s Deaf side that played in the 2019 Oceania 7s competition here.

Speaking to SUNsports, manager Inoke Masitora said the aggressive forward turned up for training at Makoi.

“He just showed up one afternoon during training at the Police Special Response Unit ground in Makoi,” he said.

“Little did we know that he is deaf.

“I then received a phone call from one of our superiors stating his disability.

“Our means of communication is through Facebook messenger so after training he would message me to ask about our training schedules.

“He is a very intelligent and interesting player because he loves texting and he keeps in contact with his teammates through text messages.”

Masitora added Nawanawailagi is a talented young player.

“Despite his disability he is a very talented young man,” he said.

“He works hard at training and he doesn’t give up very easily.

“He plays with what he can hear and see around him.

“He’s a very strong player and loves to get involved when action heats up upfront.”
