Tailevu Provincial Council Scholarship recipient Jacqueline Suguta is planning to continue to strive for success in the male dominated field of civil engineering.

Yesterday, the elated 20-year-old was overjoyed a to receive a scholarship from the Tailevu Provincial Council education committee.

This would allow her to continue her civil engineering studies at the University of the South Pacific.

The Nabitu, Tokatoka, Tailevu lass said she was grateful to have hailed from a province that prioritises quality education for its youths.

“I am grateful that the Provincial Council is investing on educating its future generations for the betterment of our village, province and the country as a whole,” she said.

“The field that I am in is challenging, especially for women as we are always outnumbered by men.

“I left St Joseph Secondary School after Year 11 and went on to Suva Grammar School so I could take technical drawing and there were only six of us females in the class.

“In university there are still only a few of us, but I hope to see a lot more women in this field.”

She said she was willing to take on the challenge to continue her education and make her support system proud.

“I did apply for TELS, but I didn’t really push for it because I was betting on this scholarship.

“Now that I have got it I have to prove myself to keep earning my spot every semester.”
