Eighteen students will benefit from the Fiji National University’s Students’ Association (FNUSA) scholarship scheme that will be handed out today.

FNUSA president Ketan Lal said the scholarships were part of the association’s initiative last year where it had been giving out tuition scholarships to its students.

He said the funding came directly from the levies the association collects from students that were part of their school fees.

“This year we are giving 18 scholarships which are 15 for undergraduate students and three for postgraduate students,” he said.

“This is a total of $30,000 worth of assistance to our students. This amount is almost triple what we gave out last year.

“It started off as assistance to students during COVID-19 and you know many students were affected during the tropical cyclones too.”

FNUSA vice-president Safiyyah Shahib said there was a criteria that applicants had to meet to be eligible for the scholarship.

She said students all over the Fiji National University campuses Fiji wide were eligible for the scholarship.

“We give them an allocated amount depending on the college and units that they take up, she said.

“We give $1000 for undergraduate students per college.

“For postgraduate students we are giving out $5000 for each student.”

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar will hand out the scholarships at the Nasinu campus.
