Not all National Toppers recipients have produced a 100 per cent progression rate.

This was the statement made by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts at the Fiji National University’s Student Association (FNUSA) National Council Meeting at the Nasinu campus yesterday.

Ms Akbar said the ministry had identified that not all Toppers recipients remained a Topper’s recipient until the completion of their education.

“Some students drop out half way while some are switching to Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS), taking up a spot for someone who would have taken the TELS spot initially,” Ms Akbar said.

“Any student who is funded by the Government whether it’s in a form of a scholarship or a loan must justify that because there are thousands of students out there who deserve them and we only have a limited number of scholarships that we offer.

“We had to struggle to have one scholarship and here we have 600 plus scholarships but we are not having a 100 per cent progression rate from our Toppers.

“The onus lies on you that we continue to ensure that your members produce quality results, the onus lies on the university to ensure quality teaching is offered and that they deliver the best.”

The FNUSA National Council Meeting will discuss issues raised from the five colleges within the university and how it would be addressed within the University Council.
