A group of farmers in Nawai are perfect examples of what being resilient really means.

Not waiting on Government to step in to help, 23 farmers from the community outside Nadi have come together to rebuild two bridges that were washed away by floodwaters early this year.

A heavy rainfall caused flash flooding and completely destroyed the two bridges, which 72 residents use for daily access.

Community advisory councillor Shaireen Hussein said they had no other option but to sacrifice their own money to rebuild the only two bridges that provided them access to travel to the urban centres.

“This is a farm road for sugar cane access. With the help of my farmers, part of the repair has been done so that they can access the bridges,” she said.

“We had no other option. We do not want to rely or wait for the Government to do everything for us. We just thought of sacrificing our own pocket money for our own benefits and our children.”

The group have contributed $1000 so far to rebuild the bridges. They plan to contribute more to complete the work.

“Now we can access it because we have put concrete and cement, but we still have some work to do,” she said.

“We will make an effort to complete the work because our children and those who need to visit the hospital, use the access road for their daily travels.”

Commissioner Western Mesake Ledua, during a talanoa session in Bavu, Nadroga, said they were looking into the project.
