NZ Authorities Seek For Rahman To Be Extradited For Drug-Related Charges

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had made an application to extradite a 26-year-old Canadian national, Joshua Rahman, to New Zealand for drug-related charges.

The miscellaneous action was called before the Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili yesterday at the Magistrates Court in Suva.

State counsel Jayneeta Prasad from the DPP’s Office filed a motion and affidavit for Rahman to be tried for criminal charges laid by the New Zealand prosecution services.

Rahman has been charged in New Zealand for drug-related offenses.

In the affidavit filed, the charges of importing a Class A controlled drug, conspiracy to import Class A controlled drug and participates in an organised criminal group.

Rahman is charged with one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs in Fiji for being in possession of 39 bars of cocaine and is awaiting judgment by the High Court in Suva which will be delivered on April 16.

Lawyer Sharoneel Deo from R Patel Lawyers told the court that the documents were served to their office on Wednesday and that he did not have any instructions from Rahman on the matter.

He also informed the court that Rahman may not have been served with the documents because he was in remand.

Chief Magistrate Ratuvili has directed the DPP’s office to serve these documents to Rahman at the Remand Centre.

The matter will be called on April 16.
