The Namosi provincial rugby teams made a clean sweep at Nakelo District School ground yesterday.

In round one of the Skipper Provincial Cup, the Namosi Under-19, Development and Senior teams beat Tailevu 5-3, 26-20 and 19-13 respectively.

Played at a wet and slippery school ground, the visitors mastered controlling play in the heavy underfoot to secure wins.

What happened: The Tailevu senior team made a perfect start when winger Viliame Kanatabua made an intercept to score underneath the crossbar which was converted by fullback Maika Baleinalotu for the 7-0 lead.

But the Namosi pack, superior in grinding play in the wet, saw hooker Seru Cakobau scoring which was converted for the teams to tie 7-7.

But following a yellow card offence to Cakobau, Baleinalotu extended the lead 10-7 from penalty.

But quickly changing the point of attack made available after some quick phase balls allowed sub Meli Nakarawa to score untouched in the corner for the 12-10 lead at halftime.

Halftime:  Tailevu 10-12 Namosi

Baleinalotu kept Tailevu in the game with another penalty to retake the lead 13-12.

But Namosi lock forward Eparama Luvata sealed with win with a try which was converted by Netava Koroisau to retake the lead 19-13.

Tailevu forwards made three concerted attempts by the forward but it was a case so close, so far as the Namosi defence held throughout.

New Tailevu coach Seremaia Bai should lament the missed opportunities as round one exposed weaknesses which should be rectified before round two kicks off on Saturday.

Returning home with one point (bonus loss) should keep Tailevu fans happy who braved the conditions to a watch their team under new management at Nakelo.
