Bidya Kumari shed tears of joy when she saw her son, Ravinesh Lal, getting admitted to the bar as a legal practitioner on Friday.

The 65-year-old recalls how she struggled as a solo parent to make sure that her son succeeded in life.

She was pregnant with Mr Lal when her husband passed away.

“It was hard when I had my son because my husband passed away when I was still pregnant with him and seeing him today makes me happy,” Ms Kumari said.

“I am very proud of my son. He is hardworking and most of the time when I wake up in the middle of the night he would be studying and today he has finally got the reward for his sacrifices.

Ms Kumari used to work on the farm to put food on the table.

New lawyer, Mr Lal said working and studying were the major challenges he faced.

“I am the first lawyer in the family, and I know that I have made my family proud,” Mr Lal said.

“I dedicate my achievement to my mother who was a mum and a dad to me. I was able to study through TELS and I want to thank the Government of the day for this opportunity.

“I was working as an assistant court officer for the Judiciary Department and studying at the same time. After work, I had to go to my classes and every day I always have at least two hours of sleep.”
