‘34 Trees Cut Down At Nasese To Be Replaced’

The Fiji Roads Authority has cut down 34 trees along the Queen Elizabeth Drive in Nasese, Suva.

This is done to clear the way for the road and bridge construction.

Some of these trees were considered landmarks and others helped to provide the Nasese foreshore its aesthetic appeal.

FRA acting chief executive Kamal Prasad said these trees would be replaced.

“The FRA has completed its Environment Impact Assessment and we have received approval from the Department of Environment to remove 34 trees as well as some coconut/palm trees from Queen Elizabeth Drive,” Mr Prasad said.

“For each tree removed, the FRA will replace it with 10 trees and 1:1 for the coconut/ palm trees at the My Suva Park foreshore or any other location identified by the Suva City Council.”

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said trees and plants were a part of Suva.

He said Suva was not just about buildings and businesses.

“We look forward to the replanting. Trees are very important and we need more trees,” he said
