The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has backup medical officials at COVID-19 vaccination sites to attend to vaccinated Fijians who start showing symptoms associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said they have been in constant discussion with the World Health Organisation to manage the risks and are referring to the guidance available on their website.

He was questioned in light of reports that the Australian Government had delayed its AstraZeneca vaccination programme and advised citizens under 50-years-old to get the Pfizer vaccine.

After receiving the jab, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told all Fijians that Government had updated its guidance and plan on how to keep Fiji safe.

Referring to new evidence suggesting that some people would face very rare side effects of blood clotting after getting the vaccine, he said the risks were low.

“We are talking about one person out of around 250,000 who receive the vaccine but it’s important we take steps to manage that risk no matter how small it may be,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“We have new guidance being developed to spot symptoms of these serious side effect early and keep everyone as safe as we can. The benefits of protection for this vaccines are still proven to outweigh the risk by a large margin.”

“As we should all know by now COVID-19 is a much serious threat that is why we must take advantage of the great protection provided by this miracle of modern medicine.”

Furthermore, he urged Fijians over the age of 18-years-old to register for the COVID-19 vaccination programme and help Fiji defeat the virus for good.
