McDonald’s Fiji Nadi Under-19 rep Nemani Turagaiviu aims to make a mark in rugby.

The 19-year-old is among the survivors of an accident at Nabou, Nadroga that claimed eight lives and injured several others which shocked the nation on August 4, 2018.

The Yavusania, Nadi native made his debut in the 21-13 victory over Rewa in the Skipper Provincial Cup U19 category at the Prince Charles Park, Nadi last Saturday.

“I am very happy to debut for Nadi and hope for a good outing this season,” he said.

“I thank God for giving me the opportunity to live and play my favourite sport.”

It took him two years to recover from the accident.

“I had a personal battle had to push myself to the edge and with the help of physiotherapists enabled me to reach the fitness level worthy to put on the Nadi jersey,” he said.

“The support from the vanua o Nadi has been overwhelming and likewise the management of the team.”

Turagaiviu attended Nadi Primary School before went on to be part of the Ratu Navula College where rugby remained part of his life.

He plays in the forwards and his icon is his cousin, former Fiji, Nadi and Yavusania RC fullback Asaeli Driu.

“I want to play for the Fijian Latui or Drua and later get a Super Rugby contract too,” he said.

He was part of the group of friends from Nadi who boarded a mini-bus to witness the Deans Trophy U18 semi-final clash between RKS and Ratu Navula College at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

He was seated behind the driver when the accident happened.

“If my friends were alive, they could have played for Nadi too,” he said.

He was part of the Ratu Navula College U16 team that lost to Queen Victoria School in the cup quarterfinal the previous week.
