Cndidate Master Manoj Kumar took out the Open category during the UniFiji-FCF Rapid Chess Championship

Held at the University of Fiji, Saweni Campus, Lautoka last Saturday, Swami Vivekananda College student Nikai Ruria won the women’s category and was awarded the best beginner prize.

Nisheel Chandra won the secondary category while Paul Corpuz won the Primary category.

The tournament saw stiff participation from Candidate Masters Kumar and Noel Adricula.

Swami Vivekananda College fielded nine players as a total of 36 players participated.

Co-chair of the UniFiji Chess Committee Dr. Ricardo Corpuz, said the tournament was a success.

“With the turnout of most students from primary and secondary schools, this will make chess one of the sports in Fiji for all ages to compete in,” he said.

National arbiter William Bennion said Fiji Chess Federation was pleased to see new players participating.

“The Federation thanked University of Fiji for helping promote chess in the western division.”
