A new variety of dalo that is tolerant to Taro Leaf Blight (TLB) was introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday.

The new breed of dalo is called tarova damu.

Minister for Agriculture Mahendra Reddy thanked the stakeholders who made it possible.

“The dalo industry itself is valued at around $100 million and its contribution falls to $27 m per annum,” Mr Reddy said.

“It is a very important crop to us.”

“We need to continue to look at way to bring in a new dalo variety so that we are one step ahead.”

“Development of new varieties is an important exercise.”

“This new variety of dalo matures within seven to eight months, good shape and it can be cooked within 25 minutes.”

Mr Reddy said TLB was present in the Pacific region and in 1993 there was an epidemic in Samoa that was catastrophic.

“Agriculture became the hope of many households who were engaged in the non-agriculture sector following COVID-19.

“We have exceptionally increased our exports”
