Sainiana Kacivakawalu wanted to make her father proud, and she did just that.

The 19-year-old scored 358 out of 400 in her Year 13 External Examination last year.

She hails from Yalava Village in Sasa, Macuata, with maternal links to Korovou Village in Nadogo, Macuata.

The former Swami Vivekananda College student is pursuing her bachelor’s in commerce, majoring in land management and geospatial science at the University of the South Pacific (USP).

“My parents are not well educated so I knew I had to study hard,” Sainiana said.

“When I told my parents my marks, my dad was emotional and incredibly happy. He thanked me for doing well in my exam and encouraged me to work hard and get a good job.

“My father does not come from a wealthy family and most of them did not finish their studies, so he motivates me to do my best.

“I thank my parents for their continuous support and always encouraging and motivating me to do my best and I dedicate this achievement to them.”

Sainiana said last year was not an easy year for her because she lost two grandmothers.

“My grandmothers from my father’s and mother’s side were two of the few people who believed in me and they were always making sure that I do well in school,” she said.

“When I lost both last year it affected me and that was one of the few challenges I faced.

“The other challenge I faced was returning to school after being home for three months due to COVID-19; we had to go through our syllabus quickly in the little time we had.

“I also gave up my books (novels) and comics and it was all worth it.”

Sainiana’s advice to youngsters is to always: “Make your parents happy by studying hard. Never give up on your dreams and always strive to become the best version of yourself.”
