When the COVID-19 pandemic hammered tourism and aviation, Shalend Kumar knew it was time for a change.

He handed over his role as manager commercial at Fiji Airports to build a safety net for his family.

He invested in his first business venture.

Hence, ‘The Junction Lomawai,’ a convenience store on the Coral Coast en route from Sigatoka to Nadi opened on April 1.

Mr Kumar said travellers and the Lomaiwai community could expect drinks, snacks, groceries, both dry goods and frozen goods, toiletries, recharge cards and more.

Soon, he will be baking his own bread too.

“This is to ensure we cater to travellers and the people in the Lomawai community,” he said.

He said after weeks of visiting the area and talking to the people in the community prior to opening the store, he realised: There was a need for a convenience store and a bread shop.

“Based on the resources and research we conducted, the location is an ideal one for the plans we had.”

Mr Kumar has said there were plans to also open a bakery in the same building.

“We have ordered the necessary equipment for the bakery such as ovens and bread slicers, and we are now awaiting shipment,” he said.

“The bakery aims to be a store that provides fresh bread and pastries to the Lomawai community and surrounding villages that need it.”

“We hope to provide the Lomawai community with the essential products that are not easy to get due to logistics and location.”

He added there were plans for further expansion in time.

“We have lots of ideas on expansion plans.”

But we also want to hear from the people around us on what they want from us.

“This also includes a traveller’s stop.”

“This opportunity is about them and what they want,” he said.
