Promoter Targets 2022 Event In Labasa

The country’s top boxing promoter is keen of staging a programme in Labasa, early next year.

South Pacific Boxing Promotions promoter Freddy Chand told SUNsports yesterday that this is a possibility if he is able to get enough sponsors.

“As you know, one promotion takes a lot of time to put together due to the costs associated with it,” he said.

Chand said the cost of hosting one promotion is around round $50,000.

“There had been requests made to me to stage a promotion at Subrail Park since Labasa is my hometown.

“I’m looking at the sponsorship side and have enquired with a few business houses but we’re still waiting on their reply.

“We’ll need that before we can bring the event over to the Friendly North.”

He said they are aware of the talented pool of boxers that are available in the Northern Division.

“We have very skilful and talented boxers from Labasa and Savusavu participating in all our promotions in Viti Levu,” Chand added.

For the past decades the North has produced boxers who have made their mark locally and internationally.

These are boxers like Smokin’ Joe Keresi, Inia Catarogo, Samuela Vocea, Sikeli Veitala, Viliame Tabualevu, Lorima Rakula, Noa Bukai, Atama Raqili, Jare Lalakai, Nat Ledua, Sharamat Shah, Lepani Bote, Amanaia Dakai, Setefano Vasuibau, Tevita Vakalalabure, Lote Duna, Ben Lanyon, Tomasi Bukalidi and the list goes on.

The last promotion staged in Labasa was in 2017.

Meanwhile, Chand confirmed that their May 22 promotion at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, is still going ahead.

He said they are hopeful that the lockdown concerning the COVID-19 pandemic would soon be lifted.

“We’ll monitor the situation,” Chand added.

The main bout is between super welterweight boxers Jese Ravudi and Siliveni Nawai.

The undercards include James Singh taking on Jonasa Kavika.
