Emotional Farewell For Parents At Momi Checkpoint

It was an emotional farewell for couple Ifereimi Kunaika and his wife Amalaini Nalaulau.

They painstakingly handed over the casket of their newborn son to Police officers at the Momi checkpoint in Nadi on Thursday.

The couple, both from Nadroga couldn’t cross the restricted border to go and bury their second child because of the 14-day COVID-19 containment restrictions between Nadi and Lautoka.

According to a relative Wise Raitala, who recorded the last moments said: “It took a long time for the father to take out the body of his son from the car.

“They were in tears as they took the body and handed it over to the Police at the checkpoint to pass it over to our relatives.”

The infant is said to have had some breathing difficulties resulting in his demise at the Lautoka Hospital.

He said the infant will be buried at his father’s village in Nabau, Nadroga.
