A 37-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his wife with a hammer in Vunivau, Labasa has been remanded in custody.

Ashneel Kamal Deo appeared before Magistrate Jagodage Bimsara yesterday at the Labasa Magistrates Court charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The alleged incident happened on April 21, 2021.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vignesh Prasad informed the court that he has yet to receive the medical report of the victim because she was airlifted for further treatment at the CWM Hospital in Suva yesterday.

Magistrate Bimsara said since it was an indictable offence the matter has to be transferred to the High Court in Labasa.

The court heard that it was not in the interest of justice to release the accused on bail.

Hence, he was further remanded in custody.

Magistrate Bimsara explained to the accused that he could submit his bail application at the High Court.

The accused replied that his mother was 63 years old and relatives were looking after his two children aged seven and nine.

The case will be called at the High Court on May 6.
