Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry chair, Dr Ram Raju has called upon the landlords to be more understanding and offer rent reductions to tenants.

In an email correspondence to SunBiz, he said landlords in the Nadi, Martintar and Namaka business district areas needed to be generous and allow tenants to remain.

“This is in light of the second lockdown in greater Lautoka and Nadi areas,” he said.

Plans Delayed
He said the lockdown prompted by latest COVID-19 cases had pushed back plans of opening the international borders.

“That will obviously add further delays in our recovery plans,” he said.

He said the health and safety of the citizens remained paramount.

“The COVID-19 vaccination is already underway and this needs to be fast tracked.

“Social distancing, self-care in the form of masks and hand sanitisers will have to be imposed and perhaps made mandatory.

“We cannot relax or compromise with all these measures if we are to effectively manage this virus,” he said.

Hope
In such trying times, Dr Raju said he remained optimistic that like before, affected areas could certainly innovate and find the best solutions.

“After the last lockdown, up to 40 businesses had closed but eventually all the shops had reopened for some other business activity.

“We saw a mushrooming of barber shops or salons, restaurants, cake shops, kava bars and more.

“Hopefully the lockdown will be short-lived if everyone takes heed of the advice and implement all the measures necessary to leverage or mitigate against losses,” Dr Raju said.
