Needy people around Votualevu community have been flooding the Everyday Supermarket in Nadi after the Chinese community set up a community pantry to help those in need.

The supermarket at Votualevu stuck up a poster ‘Everyday Supermarket is here for families in need during this difficult time!”

Supermarket manager, Charlie Luo, said the initiative to provide for the needy people around the area was an initiative of the local Chinese community.

Ms Luo explained that under the current COVID-19 pandemic, the spending pattern at her store was slow. This was an indicator that people were really suffering financially, she said.

“Because of the lower sales, we know that the people are poor. People have lost their jobs, and some are really in need, especially for food,” Ms Luo said.

She said the Chinese community communicated with the supermarket to help these families around Votualevu. At the supermarket, there were two sections that were packed with free food items like bread, biscuit, sugar, rice, flour and milk.

Meanwhile, the store has also given a shelf space for donations of grocery items which people in need can collect for free.

Ms Luo encouraged other good Samaritans who also wish to contribute to contact their office.

“Our Filipino neighbour has also donated some food items and those who want to donate can just come to us,” she said.
