Thirty families of Tovatova, Nadi, received a timely boost when they were able to collect food packs at the Mulomulo checkpoint.

The distribution packs were funded by Shameema Khatoon from New Zealand, formerly of Mulomulo, Nadi. She is also the daughter of SSS Investment director Saiyad Begg.

Jamiat Ahle Hadees-Fiji, Nadi Branch president, Nadeem Mohammed, said the funds were sent to their organisation. They identified the families living beyond the border, who were in need of food items and provided for them with the packs.

“I must thank Sister Shameema from New Zealand who is originally from here, for thinking about the struggles of her people back in Tovatova. Her contribution means a lot to the struggling families,” he said.

“We are trying to help out some families beyond the border, who were in dire need of support.

“We did a distribution last week, aided by i-Charity-Australia, catering for about 100 families and this is an ongoing process. i-Charity Australia continued with its regular aid and this year, increased the grant based on the COVID-19 conditions, especially in Nadi.

“This is important to us because we are doing this during Ramadan, our month of fasting.”

Meanwhile, one of the recipients, Heman Kumar, said: “We haven’t got any food at home because we can’t cross the border, but we were grateful to those who have assisted us today.”
