Pregnant Theft-Accused Fronts Magistrates Court

Pregnant 34-year-old Usha Devi, was granted bail by the Magistrates Court in Suva after she appeared on a charge of theft yesterday.

She is alleged to have walked out of the NEWWORLD Supermarket in Damodar City with a shopping trolley full of items and did not pay for it.

She was allegedly stopped by supermarket security as she was packing the goods into a taxi.

The charges were read to her and she told the court that she understood the charges. No plea was taken as she opted for Legal Aid Commission representation. Police prosecutor Shelveen Sharma said they did not object to bail.

Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekera granted Devi a non-cash bail of $2000. She was warned not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.

She was told to return to court on May 31, to confirm the status of her legal representation from the commission.
