Seafarers Pay $250 For Breaking Rule

Three men, who were found consuming alcohol at the Narain Jetty in Walubay, have been convicted and ordered to pay a fine of $250 each.
Pauliasi Davetawalu, 41, Joji Vuli, 29, and Gauna Bera Halofaki, 38, staff members of MV Nabukelevu admitted that they failed to comply with the Public Health protection notice issued by the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services.
The trio were found by Police on Wednesday drinking alcohol – engaged in a social gathering.
They sought forgiveness from Magistrate Joseph Daurewa and promised not to reoffend.
Magistrate Daurewa said the maximum penalty for breaching the Permanent Secretary’s order was initially set at $40 fine however because of COVID-19 it has increased to $10,000 fine or five years imprisonment.
He revealed that there was no tariff set for the offence.
After considering the circumstances surrounding the case and the offenders mitigating submissions, Magistrate Daurewa convicted them and chose to impose a fine.
He advised them to stay home with their families and follow COVID measures and protocols.
Their case has been adjourned to May 31 for review.
