COVID-19: Chinese Dongguan Farmers Share The Food

The Chinese Dongguan farmers are pleased that they have been able to assist in the food distribution efforts this weekend.
Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese Association, thanked Robert Chung and Shaun Yuen who worked with her to mobilise the farmers.
“When the curfew was announced, I reached out to Robert Chung and Shaun Yuen. They are committee members of the Chinese Association of Fiji and Chinese Youth Social and Cultural Association,” said Ms Seeto.
They asked the Dongguan farmers who could access their farms if they would kindly provide vegetables and produce to those families in need, hospitals, institutions for aged care and children and families of front liners.
“Yesterday’s (Saturday) contribution was approximately $9000 in market value. More will be donated today (Sunday).
“Seven farmers donated on Saturday, and other farmers are coming forward already this morning (Sunday). Once the news got out about the generosity of the farmers yesterday, others came forward.”
She said she has been contacted to arrange for further collections.
The farmers’ representative is on the Board of the Chinese Association of Fiji.
“The representative is from the Dongguan Association and we all work collaboratively under the Chinese Association banner.”
Ms Seeto said the intention was to share and assist those in need by providing some food, particularly vegetables and food crops to supplement the food rations provided by the Government.
“Fresh produce is perishable and easy to cook so in this period of curfew, this is a valuable source of nutrition.”
She also added that the Ministry of Health transport team was very efficient in responding to deliveries and distribution.
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry staff for all the excellent work they are doing over this wet weekend.
“I appeal to the public to stay calm and listen to medical advice and allow the work of the medical and food distribution teams to be carried out smoothly with minimum disruption.
“Please be patient with the Government teams who are doing their utmost best during these difficult times and in this raining weather.
“If you can help with donations in cash or kind, please do so. Help each other where we can but follow the protocols.”
The vegetables are also being delivered to hospitals.
