COVID-19: Food Help And Dishonest people

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr James Fong is calling on the public to be honest when contacting the 161 food assistance helpline.

Last night, Dr Fong said that the Government remained steadfast about delivering food to those who really need it.

However, he said there were people aiming to benefit from the assistance by getting more than one pack per family.

He said this was wasting time and resources which could be used to help those who were in genuine need.

“Be honest about your food requests and if you do not need food then do not ask for it,” he urged.

He said they were receiving a steady flow of requests for food assistance on the 161 line, text messaging, and through email from families in the Suva-Nausori Lockdown Zone.

And as of yesterday, more than 7,000 food packs were delivered.

“We are committed to assisting every family who genuinely needs this assistance.”

Dr Fong thanked the wide reaching support from government agencies, businesses and individuals which made the food pack distribution possible and those who offered assistance to medical teams on the field.

He also thanked the Water Authority of Fiji for delaying some of their maintenance work in the greater Suva Area so that Fijians had reliable access to water during the lockdown.

“Your support allowed us to focus on the life-saving work at-hand.”
