Suva-Nausori Residents Rush To Supermarkets After Lockdown Lifts

Following the lifting of the 56-hours curfew period in the Suva-to-Nausori containment area yesterday, members of the public flocked to supermarkets around the vicinity to replenish food and household supplies.
Long queues were formed at supermarket entrances for hours, in a bid to enter and carry out their shopping activities.
Supermarket attendants had to ensure that members of the public adhered to COVID-19 protocols while queuing up at supermarkets yesterday.
Members of the Fiji Police Force were also visible, trying to contain the crowd as people rushed in to do their shopping.
Anita Devi of Nasinu Road, Valelevu said she was part of the long line of customers at Max Val-U Supermarket. She lined up at 12pm and managed to enter the shop at 12.55pm.
“We have really learned our lesson, so it is better that we are prepared, should there be any other lockdown or if an extended curfew is announced,” she said.
Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr James Fong, in his nationwide announcement, has reminded Fijians that the lifting of the 56 hour curfew was not a cause for celebration.
“Reckless celebrations of the end of the lockdown will give us no choice, but to recommend another one so please make smart choices and spare the nation from that drastic course of action,” he said.
