64-year-old, Shri Mati, could not turn her love away from a family, who had spent a night in a field, under a plastic shed.

The family claimed they were evicted by their landlord.

Since April 30, Adrian Koroi and his small family including a two-year-old son and two-weeks-old baby have been living under a makeshift house in a field at Mate Road, Korovuto, Nadi.

“I came to know about this family from a neighbour,” said Ms Mati.

“I felt so sorry for them, so I gave them a piece of land to build their home. I also provide a water pipe for them to drink from.”

New Life Assemblies of God’s, Reverend Matia Daveta, who lives nearby also supported the initiative and gave building materials  to the family.

“When I went there I couldn’t stop my tears after looking at the two kids sleeping under the rain tree,” he said.

“We have built a temporary shelter and a temporary bathroom. I have contacted my friends who had assisted them with foodstuff, clothes, and bedding items.”

Mr Koroi, 35 said they were evicted by their landlord, Reggie Ali.

Mr Ali, said that he evicted the Koroi family because they have been allegedly stealing and killing his livestock.

“I provide them with everything they needed and even gave them a cow to provide milk for their baby,” Mr Ali said.

“I asked Koroi just to help me look after my livestock. It was then that I realised that most of my goats and cows have been stolen and killed.”

Mr Koroi refuted the claims made by Mr Ali against him.

Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua confirmed that there was a report lodged and an investigation was underway.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is also investigating the matter.
