Health Volunteer Pays $200 Fine For Trying To Meet Girlfriend

A Ministry of Health and Medical Services vector control unit volunteer, yesterday apologised to the Magistrates Court for failing to comply with the current COVID-19 curfew hours.

Akuila Tawakilai, 22, of Tacirua appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon at the Magistrate Court in Suva.

Tawakilai pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to comply with the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 order.

The Court heard that at 5.45pm on Sunday, May 16, Tawakilai was found loitering at the Fiji National University College of Nursing dormitory compound in Tamavua.

A security officer who was making his rounds in the compound caught Tawakilai and alerted police.

Tawakilai told the court he was at the university dormitory compound to meet his girlfriend on Sunday afternoon.

In mitigation, Tawakilai sought the court’s forgiveness and promised not to re-offend.

He was fined $200 and was ordered to pay it in 28 days. Failure to do so will result in 28 days jail time.

In another case, two men from Nanuku Settlement in Vatuwaqa were arrested after they were caught roaming the streets of Nanuku at 11.35pm on Saturday.

Jone Naisausau, 32 and Kalavati Nawalu, 19 told the Court they were aware of the curfew directives but were under the influence of alcohol.

The duo were ordered to pay a fine of $200 each within 28 days.
