The love of nursing a new-born is the reason why a 65-year-old retired midwife returned to her call of duty.

On May 9, Karalaini Macanawai received a phone call from the Ministry of Health requesting her to offer her midwifery services during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Macanawai said she was told to join three other retired midwives onboard MV Veivueti.

She said not only does she assist at MV Veivueti but she also assisted mothers with their recovery once they were transferred to the Lautoka Field Hospital.

She said being a midwife has always been a rewarding experience for her.

“I always loved to look after women and their babies, that is my interest,” Ms Macanawai said.

She said the best feeling is being the first to say hello to a newborn.

She said while being a midwife maybe her lifelong passion, it was a strenuous job at times.

“The most challenging is the shift work from 7am to 7pm especially for my age, there’s only four of us.

“Another challenge is the venue because it’s very hot and at times there’s no privacy but we can’t do much because this is an emergency situation.

She said her family are accustomed to the demands of her field of work.

She served in the profession for 35 years.

“I have five children and six grandchildren, I think my family is used to it because I leave them often and I go around the South Pacific,” she said.

She said she remained connected to the health sector regionally engaged by UNFPA(United Nations Population Fund) traveling to Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, Federated States of Micronesia for midwifery and public health discussions.
