Only Travel For Emergency Purposes, Cikobia Island Villagers Told

The people of Cikobia Island in Macuata are only allowed to travel out of the island for medical purposes and shopping.
This was confirmed by the Nalele Village headman Josaia Rasoso.
He said the travel restriction had been imposed since April 20.
There are four villages on the island, Nalele, Vuninuku, Vatulele and Nautovatu.
“The travel restrictions are in place for the safety of everyone on the island,” Mr Rasoso said.
“If anyone wants to go shopping they have to tell their village headman and he will give them the pass.
“If it is for medical reasons, the nurse at Cikobia Nursing Station will give approval after stating that there is an urgent need to get medical attention.
“People on the island go shopping once a month because travelling costs are high.”
He said so far no one has breached restrictions.
“Our island was devasted by Tropical Cyclone Yasa and many have since looked for a second home in Labasa,” he said.
“Some have settled in Namara Village because it is easy for them to send their children to secondary schools and sell produce at Labasa Market.”
“I have been the village headman for five years.”
He said this coronavirus pandemic has changed their lifestyle in many ways.
More than 100 people live on the island. Their main source of income is their marine resources.
