Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has relieved Government MP Joseph Nand from his responsibilities as the Assistant Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts. It comes into effect today.

In a video that had gone viral, Mr Nand was seen being served a bowl of kava while joining Parliamentary proceedings remotely from his home.

The video has attracted a lot of criticism from the public calling for his termination for such behaviour and has been widely shared on social media.

In a statement by the Attorney-General and FijiFirst General Secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last night said: “In adhering with last night’s statement by the Prime Minister and as per the FijiFirst Government’s strong stance on adhering to strict Covid-safe protocols and maintaining high standards of Parliamentary behaviour, the Prime Minister has relieved Hon. Joseph Nitya Nand of his responsibilities as the Assistant Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts effective from 31 May 2021.”

“Although this is rather unfortunate for Hon Nand, the FijiFirst Government has to maintain and be seen to be maintaining strict policing of COVID safe measures by every Fijian citizen, especially one of its own party members.”

“We believe, as we have demonstrated in the past, that implementation of our principles must begin at home.”

“We do not discriminate and as per our party policy, we treat every Fijian equally.”

“I have spoken to Hon. Nand and he understands the principled stance of FijiFirst. Our party is bigger than any individual and we will ensure that we will continue to maintain our principled
stand under our party leader and Prime Minister of Fiji, Voreqe Bainimarama.”

“The Fijian public can rest assured that the FijiFirst government will do everything possible to ensure that we all fight this pandemic together, united and focussed as a nation to revamp our economy, bring back jobs, provide a social safety net and sustain livelihoods.”

“It was also as per the FijiFirst Government’s strong stance on adhering to strict Covid-safe protocols and maintaining high standards of Parliamentary behaviour.”

Nand Responds
When contacted last night, Mr Nand said: “I confirm receiving the notification about my duties as Assistant Minister.

My allegiance remains with the Prime Minister and the FijiFirst Party.”
