Please pray for our frontline workers in Fiji and abroad because we are here sacrificing a lot for your safety.

These were the sentiments shared by Katarina Niubalavu, a nurse based on the Government Medical Ship, MV Veivueti at the Lautoka Wharf.

The mother-of-five children has been in the medical field for the past 11 years. The endless support from her family and husband, Sefanaia Waqarua, also a medical professional, is the main ingredient to do what she loves best – helping the people of Fiji.

Ms Niubalavu, who is part of the Infection Control team at the Lautoka Hospital, had missed out a lot on family time. She says that being part of the team of frontline workers on the medical ship has so far been her greatest blessing.

“My parents are both retired school teachers. I attended Vatukoula Catholic School and moved on to Saint John’s College in Levuka and I can say that this was the most difficult period of my life because I was moved out of my comfort zone and had to eat whatever was provided but five years in Cawaci along with my father’s never-ending support has moulded me into who I am today,” she said.

She said it was a game changer for her when Fiji had its first case of COVID-19.

“The first thing we think of when we hear that there are people breaching protocols is our families and their safety because we are not here with them,” Ms Niubalavu said.

“Being a frontliner has opened my eyes and activated so many capabilities that were hidden until now and I am really blessed to be part of this team, the atmosphere here is not that of a team but also as a family.”
