The Fiji Football Association hopes to resume its 2021 Digicel Women’s Super League (WSL) competition once all COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Fiji FA’s vice-president Naziah Ali- Krishna said with the recently approved Fiji FA strategic plan which places a huge focus on women’s development, the future looks bright for aspiring female footballers.

“With funding and support from FIFA, we are able to invest more into women football in Fiji,” she said.

“This includes the development of the Super League competition. It is very important that we continue to provide opportunities for women and girls.”

Naziah highlighted that through the league competition, Fiji FA hopes to inspire more clubs to participate to make it more competitive and lift the level of women’s football in the country.

Fiji, currently runs a Digicel Under-19 League for girls, with majority of the players already playing for their districts in either the Women’s Senior League or the Women’s Super League.

The first Fiji FA SWL kicked-off on March 6, ahead of the men’s league providing an opportunity to play in front of a bigger crowd than they are accustomed to. Also, it gave them the opportunity to play in better stadiums.

Naziah feels there are more opportunities for Fiji FA when it comes to the Women’s Super League.

“Fiji FA aims to expand the support base for women’s football outside the “friends and family circle” and attract more male and female spectators.”
