17 Private Doctors Shortlisted To Partner With Health Ministry

Seventeen General Practitioners have been shortlisted to partner with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

This was revealed by Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the 17 General Practitioners shortlisted, to be able to provide the services, include six from Suva, one from Nausori, five from Nadi, one from Lautoka, three from Ba and one from Sigatoka.

“The update is that we are actually about to send out the contract for the 17 General Practitioners,” he said.

He said there was hope that more would come on board.

“There were 24 applications sent in, but some were ridiculously expensive.  Some wanted us to pay $50 per consultation, some wanted $40 and wanted a higher rate after 4:30pm,” he said.

“Some had different rates on weekends.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added: “So we actually obviously went for those people who have been more reasonable, and were able to provide the particular services and we hoped to send out the contracts to them actually today and then once the contracts are signed that we can have those services going ahead.”
