A field hospital at the Vodafone Arena and National Gymnasium in Laucala Bay is part of the plan of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services for the greater Suva area.

This was after parts of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva had been closed off by the ministry because COVID-19 cases had been identified in the facility.

Acting Superintendent of the CWMH and Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) Head Dr Luke Nasedra said the team hopes to start setting up the field hospital in these areas today.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said the setting up of field hospitals in Suva were all part of the strategies that Dr Luke was leading.

“This will help us go on with providing the normative functions of the Ministry of Health,” he said.

“We also have MV Veivueti that has completed its operation in the West and is on its way to Suva.

“I think it is important to realise that MV Veivueti is an asset that has been well used during the sequestration of the Lautoka Hospital and also the FEMAT Field Hospital in Lautoka.”

In Parliament yesterday Dr Waqainabete said that once all assessments on CWMH were completed there will be detailed information on what services would be available outside of the hospitals and where it would be offered.
