Electoral Bills Passed

Parliament has passed three electoral amendment bills which were debated by politicians yesterday.

The three bills are;

– Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2020,

– Electoral (Registration of Voters)(Amendment) Bill 2020, and

– Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures)(Amendment)Bill 2020.

MPs were given an hour to debate each bill and air their views after which it was put to a vote.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum urged MPs to read and understand the objectives of electoral reports before arguing against it.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula opposed the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2020 saying the proposed amendments do not take into account the totality of the recommendations made by the Multinational Observer Group.

He said there were concerns regarding the Results Management Information System and the recording and tallying of the election results.

Government Whip Alvick Maharaj clarified that there was no electric counting or voting process in Fiji and that everything was done manually.

SODELPA MP Adi Litia Qionibaravi said political parties should be allowed to appoint their own independent experts to check the software used during elections.

National Federation Party MP Lenora Qereqeretabua said the bills were premature and draconian because they allowed further concentration of power into the hands of a few with duplication of roles such as that of the Supervisor of Elections and Registrar of Political Parties.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the RMIS was developed by Datec and there was a full system flush conducted in front of representatives from all parties and election observers.
