Muanikoso Village residents yesterday staged a peaceful protest to air their disappointment.

The residents claim that they have run out of food after the Government gave them only one food ration since they have been on lock down.

Manager/Coordinator Infrastructure Sector at the Ministry of Economy, Kamal Goundar. said they distribute food rations according to their schedule.

“In the morning we distributed 140 food rations at Muanikoso housing and Muanikoso Village will be distributed this evening,” Mr Goundar said.

Police Spokesperson Savaira Tabua said that they had to interfere and advised the protestors to return home.

She added that the Fiji Police Force had also made a request to the Ministry of Economy for food rations to be delivered to the area.

A resident, Mohammed Ariff Buksh, 34 said the ration they received did not last for three days since there were eight family members at his home.

“My concern is if the Government wants to put us on lockdown, then that’s fine but provided, we get enough ration to support our family.

“If we don’t work then how can we support our family.”

Another resident, Amelia Seinibuavoro said there are more than 100 families living in the lockdown area.

“All we could think of is what to put on the table for our family,” she said. “There are seven people in my family, and we are all at home which means we need food that would cater for all of us,” Ms Seinibuavoro said.

“We have been given ration two weeks ago and we have no food, and a lot of our neighbours are facing the same problem.

“There are more than 100 families living here and all we can think of now is what we will put on the table for our family and children.”
