A hotel in Pacific Harbour is planning a community market day.

Uprising Beach Resort manager Rusiate Naulivou said the market day was a platform for staff to generate income for themselves.

An area near the resort is cleared and will be provided with resort tents and stalls free of cost for staff members to use during the market day, he said.

Interested members of Pacific Harbour community will also be able to acquire a stall for $7 to $10 dollars a day.

Mr Naulivou said they were working on ways to meet the daily operational cost despite the close of the resort.

“We are currently using the resort’s generator a few hours a day as Energy Fiji Limited disconnected our electricity supply last week,” he said.

Plans to lease villas and day rooms for local guests are expected to generate some revenue for the resort, Mr Naulivou said.

The announcement comes on the heels of a fundraising scheme where management was challenged by the board to raise revenue.

Mr Naulivou said management’s decision to sell lovo packs followed discussions where the skeleton staff were urged to think outside the box.

He said the resort’s directors had challenged management to find ways to assist the remaining 19 staff members that were on the payroll.

“The resort has been closed since April 21 as most of our bookings were cancelled,” he said.

More than 40 staff members were sent home last year. Recently, all 19 from April were sent home.

The cancellation included a weeklong church conference, resort buy-out wedding, and National 7s team camp following the lockdown, said Mr Naulivou.

The resort employs a skeletal workforce who serve as security at the resort.

“Staff were paid $50 each last week from the sale of 43 lovo packs, organised by the management,” Mr Naulivou said.
