Something is better than nothing, says Sarvina Devi.

Yesterday, she was among the 20,000 applicants who received their $50 assistance from the Government.

“With the $50 I received, I am planning to pay my bills and get what we need for the family,” she said.

“I appreciate this assistance from the Government. Something is better than nothing.”

Ms Devi, a mother of one, is the sole breadwinner of her family by selling hand-made jewellery outside the Lautoka Municipal Market. She has been selling her craft works for at least 15 years and is grateful that the money earned over the years has provided the immediate needs for her family.

Her husband, Hemant Kumar has also been a supporting arm to the family.

She said COVID-19 had an impact on her business, but she has learned to overcome those hardships.

“People only buy the handicraft when they need it and that is what is really hard for me now in terms of earning revenue,” she said.

“What I used to earn in a day before COVID-19, I am now earning in one week.”

She said there were days when she made no sales.
