We are very happy to be back at work in our bubbles, developer of WG Friendship Plaza, WG International Real Estate Co. Limited, acting manager Julian Yuen says.

Under construction, the 28-storey WG Friendship Plaza on McGregor Rd, is dubbed as the highest building in the heart of Suva.

Mr Yuen explained after the second wave of COVID hit, construction was halted.

“With construction halted I didn’t wait around, I wrote a letter to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport (MCTTT) where I was told to apply for a permit to operate as a Special Approved Business.

“While I was waiting for the permit to come through I had to ensure that we had all COVID-safe protocols imposed by the Ministry of Health and MCTTT in place.

“The Ministry finally gave approval on Monday and we started work.

“All the construction employees living on site have been divided into smaller operational bubbles and we have also received our first vaccine jab.

“We are happy to be back at work.

“Now construction will be back on track and we are awaiting some construction equipment from local suppliers to be delivered as well as a shipment from overseas.

“We have also ensured that the updated version of the careFiji App which has the QR code installed for the safety of our employees.

“Now our employees can check in and checkout using the upgraded version of the cafeFiji App.”

Currently 20 employees are on site with more than 20 living off site.

He said with commencement of work, he now has to accommodate more employees who are currently at home and would return to work soon.

“Apart from the employees who live on site, we have some employees who will be travelling daily to work so they will be returning to work soon.

“I am working on a plan such as implementing special measures for them, for example in terms of transporting them daily to work and creating operational bubbles for them.”

Mr Yuen thanked MCTTT for their support especially during this time.

Earlier, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts sealed the deal with WG International Real Estate Co. Limited.

The 28-storey building is going to feature premium apartment blocks, office spaces and a luxury hotel.

Once the WG Friendship Plaza opens it will create more than 200 jobs.
