Goundar Shipping Limited has expanded its fleet to include two more vessels.

Co-owner and managing director George Goundar said the two new vessels would service the Lau Group, even without a franchise.

The investment was in the vicinity of $4 million.

Mr Goundar said the company was waiting for Japan to open its borders to Fiji, in order for his team to fly over to bring the two vessels.

“We purchased them four months ago, and were supposed to bring them in two months ago,” Mr Goundar said.

The two ships bring to 12 the number of vessels in Goundar Shipping’s fleet.

The ships are said to be the same size and model as his most recent addition MV Joseph P.

Mr Goundar said the vessel measured 60 metres in length and ran at 16.5 knots, which was ideal for the Lau route.

He said the two new vessels had enough room to cater for 250 passengers and cargo.

“The people of Lau deserve this service,” Mr Goundar said.

“If we can run once a week, you can imagine the opportunities they will be able to get.”

More people may return to the maritime islands because of better accessibility, Mr Goundar said.

He said a key reason for continuing the business was because of his crew and his passengers.

“I know it would be a haywire if I pulled the pin,” Mr Goundar said.

“Being raised on the islands, I know what it is like, and how hard it is to get the same opportunities as those living in the mainland.

“We only want the same for them.”

He hopes to be able to work with the relevant authorities.
