An extended family of 19 members in Cunningham, says they have been surviving on Government assistance for the past two months.

Alesi Raluve said they had been lucky, but she began to run out items for her children.

The mother-of-four decided to barter her wedding ring.

However, the overwhelming response she received on social media resulted in her keeping the most treasured wedding gift from her husband.

Many asked her not to barter her wedding ring and they would buy what she needed.

She said she had no option but posted on the Barter for Better Fiji Facebook page that she needed baby items in exchange with her wedding ring.

The 28-year-old said she had nothing else to barter.

“My wedding ring meant a lot to me, and I had to barter it for my children,” Ms Raluve said.

She said things were tough at home during this time and her husband’s wage was not enough to cater for them. He was the only breadwinner.

“I don’t own much which meant I had nothing to barter and the only thing I had was my wedding ring. I felt sad when I posted it but I would do anything for my children”.

Ms Raluve said the response she received from Fijians in Fiji and abroad was overwhelming.

“I am grateful to everyone that came forward to assist my family in this difficult time. Some sent me money through MPaisa and some came home with groceries.

“I am forever grateful”.

Ms Raluve said her husband did not know that she wanted to barter  her wedding ring and told him later when he saw groceries at their home.
